High Rhine-Lake Constance
The High Rhine-Lake Constance region is in the very southwest of the federal republic – separated by the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen. The natural and geographic variety is divided into three rural districts.
With 2,756 square kilometres, the High Rhine-Lake Constance region reaches from the Rhine river plains via the mountains of the Black Forest Highlands to the west shore of Lake Constance. Almost 686,000 inhabitants are at home in the region that is characterised by its diversity, benefitting from the high quality of life. The intense interrelations with the neighbour countries are the essential feature of the region: In the three corners region of Germany/Switzerland/France around Basel, there is a marked economic and political cooperation. But there is also close cooperation with Austria and Lichtenstein.
The trinationality of the region also brings about infrastructural advantages. Even if High Rhine-Lake Constance itself can only offer regional transport possibilities, Basel is internationally connected excellently to the sea way by a harbor, a motorway and an airport. Furthermore, the Zürich airport is not far away.
Finally, the High Rhine-Lake Constance region also has a special role for gourmets and tourists. Due to a wide range of activities like hiking, skiing, strolling as well as a large cultural offer, everybody will find what they are looking for. Also, the region has many culinary treats to offer: In 1966, Germany’s first Michelin star was awarded here – the restaurant has kept it until today.
At the location that is unique in Baden-Württemberg in the three corner region, the success concept is "medium-sized businesses". 90 percent of the enterprises in the region have less than 20 employees. On the other hand, only three percent of the enterprises in the region are industrial companies with more than 500 employees. Together, the companies and their employees constitute a strong network that is present on the world market with export ratios of more than 50 percent.
In accordance with the diverse environment and culture, a wide diversity of enterprises in the High-Rhine-Lake Constance region has established as well. For instance, clusters in the fields of aluminum processing, automobile, biotechnology, forest/wood, IT, environmental technology, packaging technology formed. The innovation strength of chemical pharmaceutics and the biotechnological sector is of special importance.
In the field of universities as well, the High-Rhine-Lake Constance region can profit from the trinationality. One university as well as one dual and one private university are resident in the region and bring together young specialists of different origin. Furthermore, the Konstanz elite university is located near Lake Constance. Worldwide, it ranks number 443 (QS world university ranking). Furthermore, renowned universities like the universities of Freiburg, Basel, Zürich and Mulhouse are in immediate vicinity.
